Invisibility cloak 'step closer'
An illustration of a person wearing an invisibility cloak
For now, the invisibility cloak remains a thing of science fiction

Scientists in the US say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people invisible.

Researchers at the University of California in Berkeley have developed a material that can bend light around 3D objects making them "disappear".

The materials do not occur naturally but have been created on a nano scale, measured in billionths of a metre.

The team says the principles could one day be scaled up to make invisibility cloaks large enough to hide people.

This is nothing short of amazing, i could think of a few ppl that we could make disappear.

Can you imagine this in war?!

It would put a whole new spin on unconventional war tactics where fighting is done in the shadows, ambushes and small unit-actions. Something like this would have worked like a treat in the British and Northern Ireland conflict. I bet the American military are looking at it closely too, given the modern low intensity conflict they've gotten themselves bogged down in over in the middle east.

Agreed, can you imagine how this would work on the streets of Iraq or Afganistan, the US could use its usual brute force to get started then deploy small operational teams to the streets, cloaked.

There is something comical about me and you trading military battlefield schemes when my avatar reads 'Nobby is GAY'.

I also wonder how they will use this kind of technology to further infringe on civil liberties, can you imagine FBI agents sneaking all over the place cloaked, with no warrant?
