Thought some of the UFC fans here might find this interesting:

Quote:
In December 2009, Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Lorenzo Fertitta testified at a hearing of the US House Judiciary Committee, claiming that the UFC is losing millions to online piracy. Now, in an RIAA-style escalation, the company says it will not only start suing sites, but also individual downloaders.

Quote:
For a company of their size, no-one should be surprised at this development. However, the next revelation will have eyebrows raising all over. The UFC will now, RIAA-style, go after individuals who pirate their content online.

“When people start going to jail,” says White, “people will stop doing it.”

After trying the cease and desist route in dealing with illicit content, White, who is famous for not being able to speak a sentence without cursing, says UFC are ready for the next level.

“It’s going to be a battle, man,” he said. “It’s going to be a battle, but I’m ready to (expletive) fight,” he said. “We’re gonna go after them, we’re gonna go after them hard, and we’re gonna hurt em.”

Lawrence Epstein, general legal counsel for the UFC, said the UFC could subpoena sites in order to gain the IP address of people who are illegally downloading and sharing UFC events.

Bizarrely, Dana White acknowledges that suing sites and individuals will cost a hell of a lot of money, more in fact than the UFC claim to lose from piracy.

Ah, well this will make my downloading of pirated copies of UFC that much more enjoyable. :)

In an update to this story:

Quote:
Following an appearance before the US House Judiciary Committee, earlier this year the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced they would start suing those who provide or access UFC events illegally. In a new announcement the company has just revealed it has reached settlements with 500 businesses and individuals.

The UFC have annouced 500 settlements with businesses and individuals, however, that does seem rather insignificant when you consider that:

Quote:
Last Saturday’s big event, UFC 116, where UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar faced off with interim champion Shane Carwin was a huge success, pulling in more than 250,000 views on BitTorrent alone.

Perhaps they are hoping some tough sounding publicity will be enough to stop piracy?

I get each ufc within 24 hours of it being aired and no troubles so far.

Oh and Debait is hardly dead - funny that 2 ppl who hardly show up there feel qualified to comment on its activity. Also, this forum has been up for five years and has always had periods of activity alternating with dormancy, but it's still one of the few places online where you can say whatever the fuck you want, and will continue to be, for years to come. : )

Not really, i just did a lyrical shrug of the shoulders, as the forum has been noticeably quiet in recent weeks, i didn't realise i needed to log in daily in order to qualify a shrug of the shoulders. Noted.

Its not what it was, lets put it that way. A bit of Heresy and a bunch of whores from WinMX chat-a-box rooms. And it's a fucking definite that this site would be completely dead had he and I not of joined.

Places online where you can say whatever the fuck you want aint few and far between either. The idea of Debait being a bit controversial has long gone.

A further update to this news:

Quote:
Following threats in recent months that it would begin targeting those who obtain or deliver their content without permission, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced they are targeting two popular streaming hangouts. UFC have subpoenaed Justin.tv and Ustream.tv to force them to reveal the identity of a single user who uploaded two UFC events earlier this year.

Quote:
MMA fans gave the news a mixed reception, with some noting that being a fan isn’t a right and ‘stealing’ events is simply wrong. Others felt that accepting a level of piracy is a good way to get more exposure.

“The UFC has had 15 pay-per-view event in the past year. Zuffa LLC is making a killing on PPVs and frustrating fans who simply cannot afford them. Hence, the piracy problem,” wrote a contributor to MMA blog, MMAJunkie.

“MMA is approaching a saturation point and won’t be able reach the next plateau of popularity until live UFC shows are easily accessible to the average viewer. You can’t fight the Internet – even if you are in the right. The UFC needs to adapt and evolve in the way it delivers content to the consumer and take a short-term loss for a long-term gain.”

In 2009, the UFC banked $350 million in PPV revenue.

Looks like the UFC are not going to let this rest and is determined to prevent non paying viewers from seeing their product. The downside to this is, they risk losing such viewers all together and devaluing their product. I will never understand why these huge businesses don't try to work WITH the internet and offer sensible rates to watch their fights, but like many large companies they simply reach for the big stick.
